Pushing the Pencil: Teaching Types of Writing is a resource that was originally published by Edmonton Public Schools in 2011 to provide teachers of Grades 1 to 7 with background information they can use to develop a comprehensive writing program for their students. In 2020, this resource was revisited by teachers and central leaders in order to align
it with high impact teaching approaches.
The original Pushing the Pencil: Teaching Types of Writing contained many multi-use masters teachers could use to
support students as they planned, drafted, revised and edited their writing. Many of those graphic organizers have been
compiled in this companion document to Pushing the Pencil: Teaching Types of Writing 2.0.
